SUBMITTED BY: Mike Palermo

THE VALLEY GREAT 8

A "Record Day" in the Valley!

The Valley Great 8 went off smoothly on Saturday June 24th despite predictions of severe weather.  The thunderstorms and heavy rains held off but the humidity certainly made itself quite present and perhaps slowed down most of our runners.  St. John Bosco Church in Conyngham, was the start and finish for the event which also offered runners post-race drinks, food, vendors and massage therapists who worked diligently on some very sore muscles challenged by the eight mile course.

Although the course route was revised somewhat from last year, it did not seem to bother "The 2005 Women's Champion", Heidi Wolfsberger who ran a 48:16 smashing her course record set last year by nearly thirty seconds.  Heidi just returned from vacation enduring a twelve hour ride and yet managed to finish eigth overall on some weary legs.  She appears to be headed for The First Liberty Bank Luzerne County Triple Crown in the female division and today's run was yet another masterpiece in her collection of race victories.  Another runner who set a new course record is the current leader of The First Liberty Bank Luzerne County Triple Crown men's division.  Kevin Borrell smashed Tamaqua's Issaac Dunkleberger's course record by more than two minutes and averaged just under a 5:20 mile pace capturing first place.  He coasted to an easy victory and both he and Heidi will be looking ahead to win their respective championship on July 4th at Bernie's Memorial Run in Wilkes-Barre.

One other notable record was set at The Valley Great 8 in 2006.  The Valley Food Pantry received a check from our committee in the amount of $750.00, apparently making it the largest monetary contribution bestowed upon the organization.  A sincere "Thank You" to our sponsors, runners and those who donated to our cause to help defeat hunger in our area...this is one record that I would like break every year as our race continues to grow in popularity.  Stay tuned for next week for the full Valley Great 8 results.
