Jeff Skwierz and Brenae Edwards are top finishers in Run for the Cannoli 5k

(HAZLETON, PA 8-19-12) Jeff Skwierz of Forty Fort has returned to the roll of “King of the Cannoli Run” as the 30-year old scored his unprecedented seventh victory in the last eight events at the ninth Annual Run for the Cannoli 5k held Sunday at Queen of Heaven Parish in Hazleton.
Skwierz led from start to finish and hit the tape at speedy 16:38.
Mansfield University cross country and track & field standout Brenae Edwards made her first Cannoli Run a memorable one as she blistered the course record with a time of 17:49. The 23-year old from Hazle Township was so strong that her time earned her fourth overall.
The previous women’s mark was held by Samantha Snead of Moscow who ran an 18:24 in last year’s race.
The event is held in conjunction with the St. Mauro’s Italian Festival, the oldest Italian festival in Hazleton.
For their efforts Skwierz and Edwards were awarded a pair of handsome trophies and dependent upon eligible requirements, there was $100 in first place prize money.
Jacob Fetterman of Sugarloaf, a senior Hazleton Area High School’s Cross Country squad, kept the race very close as he tailed Skwierz just a few seconds back the entire 3.1-mile distance and finished five seconds behind at 16:43, an improvement one minute, ten seconds from last year.
His HAHS teammate Tyler Pecora of Drums, ran his best Cannoli race to date with a solid 17:27, good for third overall. His off season training showed as he bettered last year’s time by two and a half minutes.
17-year old Mike Lewis of Shickshinny took fourth at 17:56 while Andrew Meyers, 16, from Sugarloaf, rounded out the top five on the men’s side with an 18:09.
The women’s runner up finisher was Christina Capperell of Hazleton, who at just 12-year of age ran an impressive 20:36. Capperell runs Cross Country for Holy Spirit Academy and will be one to watch during the upcoming season. She was 13th overall.
HAHS teammates Cassie Papp of Sugarloaf, 21:38, Angie Marchetti of Hazleton, 21:30 and Brianna Papp, Sugarloaf, 21:58, rounded out the ladies top five.
This trio is going to be a force to be reckoned with for the upcoming PIAA District II Cross Country season which begins in two weeks.
153 total runners toed the line for this year’s event which takes place in the northwest section of the city. The race ran under clear skies and low 70 degree temperatures.
Participants hailed from throughout northeast Pennsylvania, the Lehigh Valley, Philadelphia, central Pa., Harrisburg, Reading, Maryland, Connecticut and New York.
Race officials have already begun making plans for the 10th Anniversary race with plans for more prize money and awards. The tentative date is set for Sunday, August 18, 2013.
