BIATHLON CLUB MARKS MILESTONE
  THE PA. BIATHLON CLUB CELEBRATED ITS 20TH SEASON WITH A SUMMER BIATHLON AT WHITETAIL PRESERVE NEAR CONYNGHAM, PA. ON JULY 19. THIS UNIQUE SPORTING EVENT COMBINES RUNNING WITH RIFLE MARKSMANSHIP. THERE WERE 3 DIVISIONS,ALL RUNNING A 4KM COURSE WITH TWO SHOOTING STOPS. HOWEVER THE MORE EXPERIENCED BIATHLETES SHOT AT 50M TARGETS WHILE THE SPORT AND SCHOLASTIC PARTICIPANTS HAD TARGETS SET AT 25M. EVERYONE HAD TO COMPLETE A 70M PENALTY LOOP FOR EACH MISSED TARGET.

  THE SCHOLASTIC ,DIVISION, WHICH IS FREE TO AGES 12-19, SAW JACOB WACKER OF HAWLEY JUST BEATING CHARLIE O'BRIAN OF ALEXANDRIA,VA BY 58 SECONDS. EACH MISSED ONE TARGET BUT JACOB FINISHED IN 15:01 AND CHARLIE WAS CLOCKED AT 15:59.THIS WAS JACOBS' 3RD VICTORY AT WHITETAIL PRESERVE. THIRD PLACE WENT TO ADAM BAHREY OF BARNESVILLE. HE RAN 16:28 BUT MISSED 4 TARGETS

  IN THE SPORT CATEGORY, JUSTIN KOVAL 30 YR OLD FROM BARNESVILLE RAN 19:13 MISSING 4 TARGETS. WHILE ON THE FEMALE SIDE ALEXA IGOE OF JIM THORPE AGE 37 CAPTURED VICTORY IN A TIME OF 23:14 AND MISSING 7 OUT OF 10 TARGETS. OF SPECIAL NOTE IS THE PERFORMANCE OF 63 YR OLD ED MYERS OF OBELISK WHO FINISHED 3RD OVERALL IN 19:34 WITH 2 MISSES.ED WAS THE FIRST MASTER OUTDISTANCING ALL 40 AND 50 YR OLD PARTICIPANTS.THE OLDEST FINISHER WAS WILLIAM COOLBAUGH OF SUGARLOAF AT 72 FINISHED IN 19TH PLACE.

  HILIARY SAUCY OF HARLEYSVILLE NOW ATTENDING THE UNIVERSITY OF MAINE WHERE SHE IS A COMPETITIVE NORDIC SKIER AND BIATHLETE, TOOK HER 4TH VICTORY AT WHITETAIL BY RUNNING THE FASTEST TIME IN THE MATCH DIVISION OVERALL WITH 20:40. SHE MISSED 4 TARGETS IN THE STANDING POSITION. SCOTT SICK ALSO INCREASED THE VICTORIES HE HAS HAD AT WHITETAIL,TO 3 RUNNING 22:28 MISSED 1 TARGET AT EACH PRONE AND STANDING POSITIONS. SCOTT COMES FROM MILLEVILLE,PA.THE MATCH DIVISION BIATHLETES ARE SHOOTING AT TARGETS SIMILAR TO THE OLYMPIC DISTANCE OF 50M AND PRONE TARGETS MEASURING ABOUT THE SIZE OF A HALF DOLLAR.

  THE USUAL HOT AND HUMID WEATHER WAS NOT A FACTOR AS PLEASANT TEMPS AND PARTLY CLOUDY SKIES MADE FOR A GREAT DAY AT THE ONLY REGULATION BIATHLON IN PA. THE PA. CLUB HAS BEEN CONDUCTING EVENTS SINCE 1994 AND HOSTED THE 2008 SUMMER NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. THE CLUBS VICE PRESIDENT, NOW HEAD TRACK AND FIELD CROSS COUNTRY COACH AT ST. FRANCIS UNIVERSITY DOUG HOOVER, IS A 5 TIME NATIONAL CHAMPION.

  THIS YEAR'S NATIONAL COMPETITON WILL BE HELD IN CALIFORNIA. MANY OF THE PA. CLUB MEMBERS HAVE TAKEN PART IN PAST NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIONS.
