Despite extreme heat, Zach Mains sets new course record at 12th Annual Run for the Cannoli in Hazleton; Kelsey Cameron is tops among females

(HAZLETON, Pa. 8-16-15) Although this past Sunday was said to be one of the hottest days of the summer with temperatures near 90-degrees, that didn’t stop the over 140 runners who toed the line at the 12th Annual Run for the Cannoli 5K.

And, while the weather was indeed hot so too was overall race winner Zach Mains, a 23-year from Coatesville, who sizzled around the 3.1-mile course at a record setting time of 15:44. The previous mark was held by Chris Wadas at 16:01 set in 2013.

On the women’s side it was Kelsey Cameron of Pringle who took top honors with her clocking of 19:25.

Mains, who ran for both Millersville and Lock Haven Universities, was on the starting line for the popular mid-summer classic foot race for the first time and made it pay off as he was awarded with the first place prize money of $150 plus an additional $50 for setting a new course record for the men.

“I really like the heat. I particularly run better when it’s like this. There was plenty of water stations along the route too,” said Mains.

“The course was very nice. It gives you a little bit of everything and the organizers did a great job with it all. I definitely look forward to coming back and trying for another win as soon as next year.

”      Not surprising in second place was multi-time Cannoli winner Jeff Skwierz, who crossed the finish line with a very respectable 16:03 which was one of his best ever runs here in 11 previous outings.      Robert Moulton, former Crestwood High School cross country standout and now head coach of the Comets, was an impressive third overall at 16:07 making it one of the closest 1-2-3 finishes in race history.

The trio ran in tight a tight pack through the first two miles with several others also within striking distance. But heading into the final 5000 meters Mains began his kick and gradually pulled to his eventual 19-second margin of victory.

Cameron was also a first time entrant of the event. A graduate of Misericordia University where she ran for 2-time and defending Cannoli champion Wadas, the 24-year old stayed among the top 10 and within sight of the leaders over most of the distance.

Heading up the hill and on to the finish she was in a great battle alongside Mahanoy Area High School running star Adam Bahrey. The spot, 11th overall, would be credited to Bahrey, however, unbeknownst to Cameron at the time, she was awarded a bonus of $50 for being the 12th place finisher.

“I thought if I went out a little fast then the run would have been a bit easier. It was tough though in the heat,” said Cameron, who ran her first mile in 5:40. “It was a very good course and although the last stretch was a challenge. It’s certainly worth coming back.”

2013 Cannoli female winner Christina Capparell, who competes at Marian High School and last year qualified for the PIAA State Cross Country Meet, finished a strong second among the ladies with a time of 20:34 and in third was Katie Kravitz with a 21:23.

Aaron Russell, 2014 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year, served as Grand Marshall and came away impressed.

“It was a great event and it was also a different perspective for me in seeing a race from several aspects I don’t normally get to when coaching. I got to see the community effort that goes into the race and it was exciting to get to ride along in the lead car through the streets of Hazleton. It was also nice to seeing a lot of alumni running and of course having Lock Haven guy’s finish 1-2 wasn’t bad either,” said Russell.

Race organizers have already begun to prepare for next year’s race which is tentatively set for the third Sunday in August.
