MATT BYRNE MAKES SERIOUS BID FOR US MOUNTAIN RUNNING TEAM AT BERRY PICKER TRAIL RACE; ABBY DEAN CONTINUES TO IMPRESS ON THE TRI SCENE-
Two-Time U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials qualifier Matt Byrne has set his sights on making the U.S. Mountain Running Team. The team of 6 will compete at the prestigious World Mountain Running Trophy Championships this September in Switzerland. The team is selected from two races, the MT Washington Road Race and the Berry Picker Trail Race.
At Mt. Washington Matt finished an impressive 6th place in his first ever mountain race, narrowly missing an automatic bid for the US Mountain Team. Making the team would require him to race at his peak potential in the Vail, CO Berry Picker race.

We are looking for a run coach in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area. We are trying to grow our program up there and also looking to add the Steamtown Marathon back on as one of our official events. That is not happening this year of course, but we are looking to do that next year! In the meantime, we are in need of a run coach for this current team who have just signed up for the Philly Half Marathon in November or the Disney Full or Half in January.
In a nutshell.....the coach would put together a training schedule for the 3 events, keep in touch with the team weekly via email/phone and meet with the team every weekend for a group training. The teams usually meet on a Saturday morning and the time varies depending on the weather/heat. We are a non-profit obviously and so what we pay our coaches is $80 per completer.

The 4.3 mile Berry Picker would prove to be a different animal from Mt Washington, as Matt would call the course "...the most technically challenging course I've ever seen." The racers went out hard over the first section, a rolling 1.3 miles stretch that would be the easy part of the course. Matt stayed conservative, going into the first steep stretch in 6th place.
The next 3 miles would climb over 2000 feet, giving the race an overall grade of 12%! To make it tougher the course consisted of rugged single track with occasional stretches of double wide gravel trails. It would be over this grueling course that Matt began to advance.
All five competitors ahead of Matt knew they would need a good showing to make the U.S. Team. Only the winners spot was assured, the remaining spot would go to committee based on performances at both Mt. Washington and the Berry Picker. Matt pushed hard as soon as the real climbing began, quickly moving into 3rd place. Coming through 2 miles found Matt moving into 2nd place and looking ahead to Simon Gutierrez. Gutierrez, who has qualified for 7 straight Mountain teams, and is 2 time defending World Masters Mountain Running champion, showed his experience with the mountains and slowly pulled away.
Resisting challenges form fellow east coaster Shiloh Mielke, Matt continued on to place 2nd overall. Anyone who has run with Matt knows he has always been tough on hills, but now he has proved it nationally. Matt's 2nd place finish makes him a strong candidate for a spot on the US Mountain Running team whose roster should be announced soon. We'll keep you posted!

Starting in the smmer of 1978, Frank Gaval of Sugarloaf and George Meiss of Drums, both advid runners decided to speed up the processing of results at races in Jim Thorpe since 1971 and George was one of the particpants in one of those events. After moving to Conyngham, Frank joined George in founding the Kinetic Energy Running Club whhich conducted many races in the Hazleton Area including the Eckley Miners Village 10KN and Valley Day 9 miler.
It was at the Valley Day Race where the two running enthusists devised the system to calcualte age group winners quickly. Insta Results was thus starting and has been processing over 60 races a year for the past three years.
During the past 30 years, Insta Results has updated thier first vehicle (a used postal truck with left hand drive) to a van used for both winter and summer sports. The duo, who are retired teachers, can look back on races that have come and gone,m grown and declined thru the years Insta Results has assisted many directors organize and conduct races throughout PA and lower teir New York.
Insta Results may be know for its race managemenet but it was also in charge of a Cross Country Ski operation for many years. The Winter sports are still enjoyed by Frank who is the President of the PA Biathlon Club and sports director of Snowshoeing for PA Special Olympics.
The partners have always tried to provide a quality service for a reasonable price. Many thanks fo to those who have supported the business over these 30 years, and the many assistants who help manage the contracted events, especially Jeff Gaval.
Insta Results has seen it all: The boom of the 70's, the increase in 5's and marathning, trail runs, and the rise of multi sport, such as triathlons.
We hope that you have had the chance to utilize Insta Results for some event or particpanted in a race under its management.
Frank and George would like to see the sport continue to grow, promoting a healthy life time committment to running.
Congratulations to Insta Results on its 30th Anniversary.
