PERFECT WEATHER LEADS TO RECORDS AT NESCOPECK STATE PARK RUNS

Runners at the 9th annual Nescopeck State Park runs in Drums, Pa were greeted with ideal weather conditions. This led to several record performances.

Christina Capparell of Hazleton, age 13 set a female 5km course record in 21:29 previously held by Emily Bilbow of 21:37 set in 2006. Christine also established a new age group mark beating the old mark of age group mark of 21:58 set in 2006 by Katie Sick of Millville, PA. Other age group times were improved in both the 5km and 10km races. Jason Smolinsky of Hazle Township lowered the 5km- 30 age group record to 18:28. It was Jason's second victory at Nescopeck. He also won in 2006.

With a time of 41:03, Misgana Bati, age 29 of Hazleton took the overall male in the longer 10km event. The overall female winner Beth Sannie of Hazleton smashed the 30 age group time held by Jen Stec at 50:17 to a fast 46:11. Richelle Fessler of Bloomsburg, age 50 ran 53:40 to set a new time over the 2010 58:36 established by Janie Edwards.

Randy Stroble, age 60 of Trout Run broke a long standing record from the 1st Nescopeck Run in 2005 which Steve Mardyniak of Hazleton ran in 48:24. Randy's time was 45:52.

Sixty trail runners covered the 5km course while 27 continued the second loop to compete the 10km distance. After race participants had a chance for raffle items, enjoyed refreshments all while over looking beautiful Lake Frances from the finish area.

All proceeds benefit the American Red Cross local disaster relief. The Nescopeck State Park Trail runs are part of the Hazleton Festival of Races.
